Redux on 5 Steps…

What I thought I would do is re-post an older article I wrote on the “5 Steps of Bible Study” as with many things we learn it is always a good idea to go back and refresh ourselves with the structure, the how to’s, and the reasons for why and the how’s of what we do. Posted in the “Special Studies” area you will find these steps laid out in an easy to follow chart.

Well, it has been a long time since my last post and I thought that while I am taking a break from my sermon preparation for this Sunday’s message, I would share with you a nice tool that I use for my personal studies, for Lesson planning and for my sermon prep.

We have all heard about 12 step programs for this and for that, and as long as Christ is the First Step, then I am OK with most plans of that sort. However, these 5 steps are not part of a recovery plan, or are they.

This is a tool to help you stay focused on God’s Word, and to help you make sure that you are always letting scripture speak for its self and that you are not relying on someone else to give you the meaning of the text. Likewise, this is a great tool to check what you are being taught. Maybe there is just a point of contention; or someone is trying to persuade you to his or her belief and you are just not sure. Well, this tool with elbow grease applied can help.
As you go through each step, it is very important that you do not skip ahead, remember that when one mines for the purest ore or rarest diamonds, there is protocol, procedure, and it requires intentional hard work!

As you work each step in order, you will find yourself getting deeper into the text, in the genre, in the world and language of the Biblical writers. All the while you are getting such an awesome, inspiring, up close and personal view, that not only can, but will change your studies, understanding of the Word and with some time even your life.

Step 1, Survey the Background, this is where you find out, who is writing, where they wrote, to whom are they writing and the like. Here the only intention is to find out information about the players. You might find that Matthew wrote his Gospel before 70 AD and it was likely written in Antioch or Palestine, and that it s genre is a gospel, and that he wrote for primarily a Jewish audience. These are the types of thing your looking for in this step.

Step 2, Examine the Context, this is where you dig in a little more and begin to find out the setting of the passage you are looking at, from the previous step, you may have been looking in Matthew chapter 5, at the sermon on the mount, here you find out Jesus is teaching, He is message is oriented in instructing about life as a disciple, life as a believer in the World, and our personal relationships and how we are to live.

Step 3, Analyze the Grammar, simply put this is looking at the relationship between the words of the text. You are looking for the important key words/instructions, verbs, nouns, phrases, clauses etc.

Step 4, Define the Words, here you get back to the original language whether Greek or Hebrew and find the definitions. Here you will be so surprised how many teachers today will use today’s definition, when more times than not, this just does not fly with the “AIM” Author’s Intended Meaning.

And lastly;

Step 5, Consult the Commentaries, this is a way to make sure that you or the teaching you are checking on is not out in left field, peddling a message outside the intended message of scripture.

You see, many teachers out there today will try to sell you the easy-believism, the idea that we are just fine the way we are and that all we need to do is, “just believe” or that God only wants to bless you and increase your fortune, if you just sow a little seed of faith. BEFORE YOU BUY IT, SELL IT OR BELIEVE IT, DIG IT OUT FOR YOURSELF AND SEE IF YOU ARE HEARING THE TRUTH!

My task is not to beat you over the head, my task is to educate you and speak, teach, preach the truth, and that is it, (disclaimer… this is very over stated, my task is much greater but for my purpose here, and to keep this post manageable, this is a sufficient representation of my task.)

Well, time has come and I must return to my sermon, I pray that you will find this tool most useful in your day-to-day studies of the scriptures, and that it will likewise prove most useful in your ability to ward of the flaming arrows of the false teachers, who are already among us.

So, I guess this may just be a recovery program for those who have strayed from the path of diligent study of the scriptures, well may the Lord bless your studies and I will try to share more tools as time allows.

In His Service, For His Glory!

So Wise…They Missed Their Savior!

That was the title to the Christmas day sermon. While many churches in our society found it “cool or hip” to close this past Sunday. I found it an offense and an opportunity. An offense because they would not close their door for Easter Sunday, nor any other Sunday, but on the day that we as Christians set aside to have a special celebration marking the birth of Jesus our Messiah they found it okay to say, “stay home celebrate your way” becuase we wont be here either.

An opportunity because our doors were open, we came together, we left the secularism of the holiday and came together to celebrate the true reason for the season. We sang hymns which praised and blessed our Lord’s name. We prayed for those less fortunate, those who were sick, and hurting.

Finally, I walked up to the pulpit and proceed to give way to the Holy Spirit’s message for us this Christmas. I had looked forward to this particular Christmas for several years, my first Sunday, Christmas since I became a minister. One I will never forget, as one member of the congregation put it “I was so enthralled in the message I forgot…” It was and is a powerful message for us not only at Christmas but everyday. Every time the Lord grants us the newness of the day, we should praise Him. And for those who are still alienated form Him, each new day is a new opportunity for you to accept His pleading. “Come all you who are burdened.”

Why Do We Love C.S. Lewis and Hate Rob Bell?

Historically speaking I am not a huge fan of Rob Bell, nor of C.S.Lewis. Now with that said, let me explain. As for Rob Bell, I just find his desire to question beyond the scope of reason. And I find it very dangerous to play so loosely with the idea that we as believers should question those foundational or as Paul puts it “the elementary” things which we have already firmly established in our own hearts and souls.   In some of my college work I was under the study of one professor who used some of Bell’s material from his Nooma series. To be honest, some I found intriguing, while others were down right disturbing.

As to C. S. Lewis, I have read several of his work and found them very illuminating, not in a complex way, just sort of the “ah-ha” simplicity in which he deals with certain topics. However, I do not find Scriptural approval for any appropriate weaving of Christianity with magic which is what Lewis does in some of his works. With that said, I am also not in favor of throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

We do, as we grow have to learn to eat the meat and cast away the bones. So, I present this article as it speaks clearly and honestly about both men.  Let me know what you think about the article, the topic, either man, just remember to be respectful, be kind and full of love when you write.

“Is there a good reason why so many ministry leaders are endeared to Lewis but opposed to Bell?”

Father’s Day… A New Depth of Meaning….

I am not one who like to use emotion to sway people into submission. I want you to accept Jesus as Lord, but I want you to do it because you have investigated the facts and come to believe that He is who He said He is.

Friday, June 17, 2011, I received a call that would not only change my life, but my ministry forever. A man that I looked up to, a man who was a mentor, and like a father to me, had passed away.

That was Friday night. Sunday I had to stand in the pulpit and preach a message about fathers to a family who had just lost theirs. Like I said, things had changed. The Sunday previous just as every Sunday for the past two years, Jim had bowed his head and heart before the Lord as I entered into the pulpit. As I preached Jim prayed, he prayed for me and every person in the building by name. He would pray that God would use the message to speak truth into someones life. He prayed that God’s Word would not return void. He prayed that I would surrender myself to God’s will and that I would listen to the Spirit, should it want me to add, change or remove any part of my prepared message. Most importantly he prayed that someone would act upon the Gospel message and accept Jesus as Lord. But not this Sunday, I would look out and I would not see his head bowed in prayer. While I did not see him, I knew he was still praying. Only this time, he would be praying in the very presence of our Lord.

I started this post off talking about emotions, and that is the way I am going to finish it. The message “My Favorite Dad in the Book” is the most emotional message I have ever preached. To be honest, I felt somewhat less than professional as I stood in the pulpit, as tears ran down my cheeks and I sobbed. But I know that those tears and sobs were genuine. It was honest emotion. Something the world is certainly missing these days. I want to encourage you to listen to this message, to take the truths contained in it and apply them to your lives. Life is short, sometimes far shorter than we can imagine.

If you are reading this and you  do not know Jesus as Lord, if you have not truly repented and been baptized for the remission of your sins, do not delay. Do not let the moments you have left in this life be wasted with trivial pursuits.

As Jim would pray I too pray, that the truths contained in this message bless your life, draw you close to God, and may they not return void.

Fishers

Well, it has been a crazy good week. The wife and I have really had some time to reconnect this past week. Out of the last seven days we went fishing five of them. I went Saturday and took one of our boys fishing. I must be getting old, everyone is out fishing me. The wife caught more all week, but I got the biggest, I landed a 22 inch catfish. Well that was with the wife, now with the boy, I caught the most and he caught the biggest, he caught a 14 inch largemouth bass. All in all a great week. I plan on doing more of the same this week, weather permitting, except I hope to dominate in size and quantity. Okay, okay I know, I am a little competitive, but hey, I am not alone. The wife is just as competitive as I am, which is something that makes our marriage so great. We are always ready to spur the other one on, rise to any challenge, and encourage success in each other. In the end though, we know, what we do, we do as one and for One, our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus.

Lord thanks for the catch this past week and may You richly bless our time this week and may we not only catch many fish, but may we also catch many men, as we fish for the Kingdom.

(BTW…we are fishing for a church fish fry later this year :) )

Let the Next Phase Commence

Well, it is Sunday, and Friday night I did it, I graduated from Central Christian College of the Bible. There were times in the past five years where I thought I would not make it. Times when I felt like giving up and quitting. Alas, I hung in there, I did not give in or let up. And I can give a lot of thanks to my wonderful wife, who stepped up beside me, when I felt the load to heavy and the climb to high. She was there with an encouraging word, and she always had a warm smile and grand advice. Thanks my love, for everything.

Graduation followed finals week, so there was plenty of stress to go around, there I was with three finals, two of them the day before graduation. This past week has been one for the books. I am as tired as I have ever been. It is almost like being in a foggy state. In some ways this week flew in other it seem like an eternity. However, Friday came, I began the day by going to the store and getting my fishing license, the wife got hers too, I guess you can figure out what my plans are for this week.  We had to be at school at 1 PM for rehearsal, which lasted until 2:30, then my wife, mother and kids came back and picked me up and we ran and got some food, then rushed back to campus in order to get to the reception, which lasted until 5 PM, from there we went to Pelfrey Hall made our way to the gym and I got the family seated, just in time to gather with the rest of the graduating class of 2011. From there we proceeded into the gym and listened to probably the best graduation message I have ever heard. Notice, I did not say, ever been a part of, because I have heard many such messages in my life and by far Professor William Walton, had not only the best message but the most relevant and encouraging, yet honest message I believe any graduation class has every had the pleasure to hear. Well, my time came I walked across the stage and it was at that moment I felt the weight lift and I realized that life was about to change. As I sit here today, I am so amazed at the love and grace God has to offer the human race. I still do not understand why so many people refuse to believe, when people all around them have amazing testimonies of this great love of God. Besides all that, I am beginning, a new chapter in my life and walk with the Lord Jesus. Today, I sit here in the realization that I am a peer to some of the greatest men; I have ever had the privilege to know. Men that I have been so humbled to study under, men of such great Christian character, that I often felt unworthy to sit under.

Today, I begin… Tomorrow, I fish. Sorry, I could not help that, I have not been fishing in almost four years and it is something I love so much, but an activity I gave up for these years so I could dedicate myself to study. I have not and will not ever give up my studies, as I walked across the stage, Dr. Fincher read my plans, and I am looking forward to continuing to minister in this community with the great people of our congregation, and I am looking forward to reading some books that are not assigned for a change. I am ready, I am willing, and…I have got to run. May the Lord God bless you and keep you until next time.

How Fitting An End!

Today, I sat for my last 40 minutes of instruction at CCCB. How fitting that my last course be about the book of Revelation, and how fitting still that our last class close out the book and as Professor Reese wrapped up the book he advanced the PowerPoint to a song, a new song, well an old song really, and we sang about our time to come that will one day be.

Shall we gather at the river, where bright angel feet have trod, with its crystal tide forever flowing from the throne of God?  Yes, we’ll gather at the river, the beautiful, the beautiful river; gather with the saints at the river that flows from the throne of God.

What a wonderful way to end my years there, it will be a day I will not soon forget. All Praise, Glory, and Honor, to my Lord and my King, Jesus! Thank you for the strength to make it through, the courage to give up everything I had ever known to come to a place I never knew existed. You, my Lord, are everything and give everything to those who choose to follow You, wherever You lead. Thank You Lord Jesus for everything!

He is Risen!!!!!

What a wonderful truth to behold, He is risen. Three words that bring hope, peace and surety to the believer’s life. Today we looked at one of the earliest accounts of the resurrection story; it comes from 1 Corinthians chapter 15. Paul writing to a church with lots of problems lays out the case for the resurrection in clear and concise terms.

This letter likely written in the early 50′s AD and is one of the first written accounts of the resurrection story. As I said the church in Corinth was full of troubles, people were suing each other, immorality was ramped and there was a group in the church insisting that there is no resurrection. Paul in his usual manner educates the church to the truth and reality of the situation. I encourage you to read that chapter it is loaded with great encouragement this Easter day.

At our early service (not quite sunrise) we looked this chapter and looked at three of the six “buts” of the resurrection story. You can check the message out in the sermon section of the Forgiving Grace Ministry website. May it be as much a blessing to you as it was to our congregation and me.

Proclaim it in the streets, Proclaim it in the valleys, Proclaim it from the mountaintop, Proclaim it everywhere, He is Risen!

It is…

Well, I would use the words of my Lord, Jesus, but I am not finished, only just beginning. Well, in my last post I wrote briefly about my upcoming senior sermon and I gave the message this last Friday and you can listen to that message here.

If you take a listen let me know what you think.

Remember we are to be good stewards who build things that last.

It should take about 15-17 minutes to listen all the way through. Enjoy and may the Lord richly bless you.

Almost…All the Way…

In three short weeks I will graduate. Today, I am going to deliver my senior sermon, to the largest crowd I have ever spoken before. I am excited, scared, humbled and willing. The message is entitled “Stewardship of the Fruit”

The enemy has been very busy this week in trying to get me distracted but thanks to the Lord and many of His faithful servants who have been praying for me, the enemy attempts have fallen short to this point. The only real matter of contention is the rain, from time to time our basement “sump pump” get overwhelmed when we get too much water at one time and it is raining a lot right now. So, I have been praying that the Lord will keeps us dry so I may deliver His message unencumbered of worry about the basement. In other words Lord keep us dry and do not let the enemy have this day to work in our lives. By the way the Lord is faithful and we are dry while there is a lot of rain to come, I rest in the faith and trust in the Lord that all is not only well but all will remain that way when we leave for school.

If you reading this and it is before 11:30 am CST today, then please join with the others who are praying for me. Pray that I remain calm ,focused, liable to God’s leading and that His word and message will change hearts and lives and that all the Glory is His.

I will post a link when the school has uploaded it to their website.
